Review on the General Choi Cup from Nathan Tyson.
The 2011 General Choi Cup was a resounding success. With over 60 entrants the competition was fierce.  All competitors displayed both a passion to succeed and a respect for their opponents that embodied the tenets of Taekwon-do: Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self-Control and Indomitable Spirit.DSC02724
I did not have the privilege of meeting the founder of Taekwon-Do, General Choi, but from what I’ve read and what I’ve heard from Master Daher, General Choi would have been pleased with the spirit shown by all competitors, instructors, referees and officials.
There was a high standard of competition in all events. Some of the highlights – the female black belt pattern division was hotly contested with a very high technical standard. The men’s black belt sparring was awesome with all spectators enjoying an at times breathtaking display…a special mention goes to Mr Trent Hayden from Il Shim Aberdeen, who is both an amazing competitor and a wonderful role model for our students. Congratulations to Mr Hayden for winning both his sparring and special technique divisions.
{gallery}Events/GCC2011{/gallery}
I would also like to thank all of the first time competitors who have now taken the first (and often most difficult) step in their competitive careers. Well done!
A number of first-time competitors also placed in their divisions – congratulations to Daniel Rivers (3rd) and Luke Tyson (1st) in their male junior coloured belt sparring divisions.
I would finally like to thank the many people who assisted with all of the duties that made the event a success: Master Daher for his wisdom, guidance and support, Mr Abdallah and Mr Sutton, Mr Weston, Mr Cariotis and Mr Gabrielides, Mr Dwight, Ms Dann, Mr and Mrs Hayden, Mr Christensen, Mr and Mrs Harper, Mr Kelly, Mr Van Beelen, Mr Steve Harper, Mr McGaw, Mr Ferguson, Mr Batterham, and all who helped carry chairs, set up rings and do corner umpiring and marshalling duties. And to parents who brought their
children along, and spectators who came along to support their friends. A huge thank you to all!
Next years event will be even bigger and better so keep your eyes on the website for all the details.

On Friday the 25th of January Mr Paul Harper, Mr Steve Harper, Mrs Michelle Harper, Amber Harper, and Mitch Sammut boarded a plane to the Gold Coast to take part in the 2011 Kick off camp, we were the Victorian contingent. Amber and Mitch were travelling to their first Kick off Camp. We were certainly putting the fear into the newbies about the two days of intense training in front of us!

Saturday morning saw us journeying down to the beach. After lining up, Master Daher was welcomed to the beach by 65 of us. The first session, instructed by Master Daher consisted of self defence techniques. All of us ended up flat on our backs at one stage or another with each participant learning 3 new techniques to combat an attacker’s punch.

On returning to back to our central base Mr Robbie Medlin spoke about leadership and what is required by not only Il Shim instructors but every student. Concepts such as integrity, self discipline, respect, perseverance, effort, encouragement, courtesy and self belief were discussed.

The second session was taken by Mr Paul Harper, the topic covered a five day program to increase strength, endurance and cardio for tournaments and reduce the risk of injury. We also learnt that Mr Van Beelen makes a very good weight bench while Mr Kelly can act like he is pushing a lot of weight very well! The session was wrapped up with Mr Peter Evans presenting a talk on nutritional products to help us in not only tournaments but our normal training routines.

After lunch Master Daher introduced our mystery guest for the weekend. Mr Henry Park had trained with Master Daher in the 70’s when Master Daher was a yellow belt.  He was very well spoken and provided an entertaining overview of training through the Taekwon-do boom of the early 70’s, thanks mainly to the appeal of everyone wanting to be like Bruce Lee! Mr Park had coined the name of our organisation “Il Shim”, meaning “one mind”, for Master Daher. Mr Park spoke about the changes he had seen in Taekwon-do and martial arts over the years and how we could increase our membership today. Mr Park elaborated on the skill and determination seen in Master Daher very early in his martial arts career and the hard work and effort they had put into their training. Out of the original training group practising under Master Yun, Master Daher was “the last man standing”. Mr Park’s presentation gave us great insight into our Masters’ early days.

The next session for the day was run by Mr Christensen. We ran through sparring drills to warm up and to “switch” us on to the requirements of tournament sparring. Mr Trent Hayden and Mr Rick Scholes, under guidance from Mr Christensen then demonstrated the different techniques required for round sparring versus sudden death sparring. After the session was complete Mr Trent Hayden spoke about his aim in becoming World Champion. Mr Hayden won gold at the World Cup in Europe last year. His insight into top level tournament sparring was beneficial to all. His drive and determination will surely see him attain his goal.

The final session for Saturday involved a mini soccer game on our knees and special technique on the banks of Tallebudgera Creek. It was a fun way to finish up the day, or so we thought. There were some very tired bodies after the soccer but Master Daher would not let us slack off! We finished up training in the creek; Master Daher let us know that this was just a taste of what was to come the next day.

The BBQ on Saturday night was welcomed with open arms; we were tired and very, very hungry!

Sunday morning saw quite a few sore and tired bodies line up for more training. Mr Kelly ran through the requirements of umpiring sparring at tournaments. Mr Kelly’s enthusiasm for umpiring rubbed off on all of us with us all yelling “Hae-Cho” at the top of our lungs! The session was beneficial for all of us as umpiring is an essential part of any tournament.

The second session was conducted by Mr Van Beelen on power breaking. Good technique, speed, focus and confidence is essential for successful power breaking and this was demonstrated by Mr Van Beelen. We then got the pads out to practise our new found knowledge.

The first lesson of session 2 was the beep test. Mr Chamberlain from the Gold Coast runners club ran the session and explained the setup of the beep test. If the fatigue from the last couple of days hadn’t presented itself it sure did after this session! Our fitness levels were noted down for future reference.

The final session of the day began by doing push-ups and sit-ups while advancing into the cool waters of Tallebudgera Creek. While this was respite from the heat the final session, run by Master Daher, was one of the toughest of the weekend. Team running through the water and 3 on 1 sparring in the water were just a couple of the exercises we ran through. There were many exhausted participants by the end.

We all thoroughly enjoyed our weekend; the variety of the sessions was great, and I’m sure every participant came away from the weekend with tips to aid their training. Most of all the weekend was a lot of FUN! Everyone from white belt to black belt had a great time, the camaraderie within the group was excellent and I am sure that everyone will be back next year for a bigger and better Kick off camp.

DSC01623

Well, here we were again for the third straight year. Exited?  Yes we were! I have made the trip down for every kick-off camp we have had and it is ALWAYS an enjoyable experience. I won’t go through a blow-by-blow description of everything we did on the two day camp; I will leave that for some of the other reports.

I will however recount some of my experiences from the two days. I saw a lot of new things to try at my club on the sunshine coast, the self-defence by Master Daher was, as always effective and innovative. I also got to experience this first hand as I was the attacker for his demonstrations!

        DSC01623          DSC01699

The talks we had from our two mystery guests were fantastic and thought provoking. I especially enjoyed watching Trent Hayden talk about his time at the Slovakian open; it was great to see this sort of thing happen as it demonstrates that as a country we are capable of providing world class competitors.DSC02012

The sparring sessions with Frans Christenson were fantastic and gave me some excellent drills to take back to the class and really exited me about my classs on Monday night!

The next day DSC01890was also as fun-packed as the first with a variety of speakers including myself. The beep test was a great indication of what fitness levels we were all at! The final session with master Daher proved, as always, to be exhausting, yet lots of fun at the same time.

All in All I had a fantastic time on the weekend and I could see the look of delight on the faces of the participants. The important message from was that this camp is NOT meant to be Taekwon-do for EVERY session, but it is a chance for the organisation to grow and for students and parents to get to know one another!

I would like to thanks Master Daher firstly for his tireless efforts in improving our organisation, and secondly Mr Abdallah and Mrs Keenan for their not inconsiderable time and effort put into this camp!

 See you all next year!

Members of the Australian Team held a training camp last weekend and it was a great success with people attending from as far away as Tasmania, Melbourne, Sydney, Hunter Valley, and the Sunshine Coast. Team members trained hard and played hard. The main purpose of the weekend was to encourage members who don’t normally associate unless in a competitive situation, to get together and get to know each other a little better. After all, we are all ONE in the Australian Team.

It was a very satisfying result, with many new friendships developing and old ones reaffirmed. I’m sure that all who attended are now looking forward to the next event with a little extra enthusiasm.

The IL Shim International Taekwon-Do Bundaberg Cup will re-emerge this weekend after a 9 year absence. The Bundaberg club under the guidance of Senior Instructor Michael McGaw will be hosting the 2010 Bundaberg Cup at St Patricks Primary School, (Powers Street Entrance) this Saturday.

Senior Instructor McGaw commented, “It has been a long time in waiting…but now it’s back and will be a regular occurrence on the ITF Australia Calender.” The tournament will be conducted under the guidance of 8th Degree Black Belt Master Michael Bou Daher. “The organisation is very privileged” McGaw said, “He is the only 8th Degree Master in the Asian Pacific Region who actually gets on the floor with his students, and to have him travel from Sydney to direct the tournament is very encouraging.”

Master Daher Taking Mr McGaw through technical training.

The last time the Rum City hosted the tournament was back in 2001 where it was combined with the 2001 Bundaberg Rum Queensland Championships which saw in excess of one hundred competitors vie for placings.

“Numbers are down on previous tournaments,” Master Daher said,” But Mr McGaw has been doing a great job up here. The Bundaberg Club had seen a decline in students, but he has managed to put the club into a rebuilding phase with great progress.”

The tournament will play host to clubs from the Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast and Miriam Vale and Agnes Water with the gauntlet already being thrown down warning the Cup will leave the Rum City.  “Regardless of the final outcome on the day, I am sure every one will walk away proud of the effort they put in and with a pledge of returning next year, and not only the competitors but spectators as well.” McGaw said.

To help celebrate the re-emerging of the tournament, IL Shim International Taekwon-Do Bundaberg extends an open invitation for spectators to take in the action free of charge. Weigh in begins at 9am sharp with the tournament due to commence at 9.30. with a canteen running for lunch

For further queries in regards to the tournament or training times Senior Instructor Michael McGaw can be contacted on 0407 145 574.

We arrived in Vienna after a very long 30hrs of travelling via Bangkok and Dubai. The weather was very cold and perfect for waiting around for hours in the airport for a bus. So that’s what we did. When we finally arrived in Bratislava, Slovakia we checked in at the hotel and crashed for several days!!!! (not really). The next day we met up with the other Australians from USMA and caught a taxi to the city centre for some sight seeing. Mum was not very happy when she found out that I forgot to bring the camera. (Oh well, too bad, you should have been there!!!!!). When we got back to our hotel we did some light training in the local park.

The following day we had the weigh-ins and then we did some more training in the park. Later on Mr Christensen also had to attend the coaches meeting. By now I was slowly starting to get over the jet lag. The hotel we stayed at was nice and the food was pretty good. The water was not so special, as it had a bit of an aftertaste. There were lots of other teams staying at our hotel and we were definitely starting to feel the buzz as the competition approached.

Competition Day 1: The next morning we got up early for the first day of competition. I was scheduled to do three events on the first day.

Special technique was first up, with “Flying overhead Kick”. There were 36 competitors in this event with the target at 2.4mtrs. At the end of the first round it was down to 7 competitors with the target at 2.5mtrs. I just touched the target in the second round but did not score so was eliminated. Only three people hit the target at this height. Next it was “Flying high side kick” with 39 competitors. Ha ha, I bombed out in this one, as I dragged my back leg across the tape in the first round.

Next up was “Patterns”. This was a huge division with 72 competitors in the first round. In an unusual draw the original 72 was cut to 64 in the second round with many people getting a Bye in the first round (me included). Then I was against Poland in the first round and I got the result and moved through to the round of 32. My next bout was against Russia and I lost in this round. I felt good about my patterns and was beaten by a very good opponent. The Russian competitors were very strong in this division and went on to take all three medals. At the end of the day I had really had a great time and was definitely ready for sparring action the next day.

Competition Day 2: Boy this was a long day. I was scheduled to do sparring today but as the day wore on it became apparent that my division was likely to be postponed. So I spent the day watching, as most of the sparring events were completed. I saw some amazing action throughout the day and I was blown away by some of what I saw. These Europeans are soooo fast. Boy have we got some work to do! There was also a lot of quite heavy contact at this competition and I saw at least ten Knock Outs. I think we need to start training for this level of contact as it can be very intimidating if you are not used to it. At the end of the day it was confirmed that my division would be postponed until the morning. I was glad they postponed my fight as I was mentally quite tired from sitting around all day waiting.

During the evening, they ran a “Finals Night” with selected divisions fighting their finals on the centre stage. It was an awesome atmosphere. One day I want to be up there!!

Competition Day 3: I couldn’t figure it out! I am sitting at breakfast and can’t hold my spoon still. I am shaking like a leaf. I had better put my dark brown undies on and take a couple of extra pairs. (I was packing it!!). We arrived at the stadium and found out that I would be on around mid morning. My division consisted of 21 competitors including members of a number of national teams and the current European Champion. I was fortunate to get a bye in the first round. My first fight was against Czech Republic. This was a hard hitting affair but by the end of it my nerves had settled and I was feeling OK. My next fight was against one of the biggest fighters in the division, a huge kid from Hungary. I spent most of the fight trying not to get hit but landed enough points in between running around to score the win. By the end of it I was struggling with my fitness. One three minute round is quite exhausting if you are going at it for the whole time. Down to the last 4! My next fight was against Poland. Obviously he was just as wary of me as I was of him, because we were both stalking each other for most of the fight. It was very much a cat and mouse affair with us both receiving warnings for not engaging, but neither wanting to be the first to make a mistake and leave an opening. In the end, he was the one who became impatient and tried to rush in. I was able to score a couple of shots on him and it was over. Now it was the final! Mr Christensen had not told me that I was through to the medal rounds and I wasn’t aware of it at the time (probably a good thing). The final fight was against Norway. This fighter was smaller in size, but very fast and I was on the defensive for most of the fight. He was also a very aggressive puncher which I don’t come across too often in Australia, and by the end of the fight we were both receiving warnings and minus points for contact. I was aware that I was ahead on points because of the electronic scoreboard which can be very off-putting and which I found can affect the way you fight (not necessarily in a good way). The time ticks down, three, two, one, my arms are raised in the air, winner!!! Yes!!! I am excited. Mr Christensen comes rushing onto the matt and lifts me into the air. This is definitely the biggest tournament win that I have ever had. THE REST IS A BLUR of phone calls and celebration.

On the weekend of 16th and 17th of October ILShim Newcastle hosted the Hunter Valley Championships. This was a great opportunity for many of our class members to attend their first ever tournament, and as such Aberdeen ILShim took a large group of students to compete. Sometimes in the class environment we seem to forget the serious purpose behind our training. Competition really does reinforce the fact that we are learning a “Martial Art” and that the purpose is to give us skills that we can use to defend ourselves. Whether we win or lose in competition is not important, hopefully this experience gives us more motivation to focus in class and therefore improve our technical ability.  All of the members from Aberdeen performed to the best of their ability and learned a great deal from the experience

We then went through a series of presentations for the booklet; Shawn Sutton began with a discussion about online presence covering aspects of internet that can be used to ensure a club is successful. This covered Websites, and the use of Facebook and YouTube to provide information to interested parties and promote the club and organisation.

Michelle Keenan then ran the group through the importance of engaging the media when promoting an event, Michelle advised on how to present information to attract the attention of Newspaper, Television, and Radio to obtain coverage for an event.

Next, John Abdallah ran us through all aspects on the general running of a club, focussing on several key points that must be considered to grow a strong club. This proved very enlightening for the group as it covered a lot of lessons learned the hard way, over a number of years.

The final session belonged to Master Daher as he went through the process of how a class should be run, outlining step by step the minimum requirements that must be met by all instructors, and the expectations that must be set with the students. This included examples of how we must present ourselves both physically and verbally. Master Daher explained where to focus training for each belt level and how to compile activities in a way students will understand while helping them to increase their ability through the patterns.

The day ended with a presentation of course certificates on the successful completion of the course, with all of the attendees knowing that the journey on the road to our Taekwon-do Dream is only just beginning.

We then moved onto some stretching ready to begin working on our Side Piercing Kick, after some pretty ordinary side kick examples buy the attendees, Master Daher drilled into the need to stretch every day. He showed a number of stretches for various parts of the lower body that are important for delivering a quality kick. After some intense stretching, the Side Piercing Kick was practised over and over with Master Daher correcting the various components required to deliver a quality Side Piercing Kick. The improvement was noticeable; however the need for stretching was evident at the admission of everyone attending.

The day ended with a run through of the IL Shim International Taekwon-do Instructor Code of Conduct and the ethical principles that must be adhered to and demonstrated by all members of the organisation.
