HADEN 2011 Bundaberg Cup

CUP SET TO BE A BIG HIT

Local support in growing for the resurrected Bundaberg Cup, with HADEN Air conditioning and Mechanical Engineering announcing their support for the tournament with their sponsorship.

Local branch manager and former Black Belt with the organisation, Mr Craig Warner, confirmed their support this week. “It’s good to be able to support the local community through an event that used to be a prominent part of the Taekwon do calendar.” Mr Warner said. “I remember when the Bundy cup was held at the Bundaberg Basketball Stadium back in 2001 where it was combined with the Queensland Championships and the local organisation filled the stadium with competitors and spectators.”

The Cup made its return in November 2010 with a small contingent nominating for its return after a 9 year absence. This year nominations had nearly doubled on last year and we also welcome a club travelling from Rockhampton for the event. “We have received nominations from the Gold Coast right through to Rockhampton and includes other ITF clubs outside of our organisation such as Millennium in Rocky and Dynamic on the Sunshine Coast” commented Bundaberg’s Senior Instructor Mr Michael McGaw. “We even received email enquiries from Pakistan, but unfortunately they are not able to attend this year.

McGaw who heads a smaller club here in Bundaberg with an average of 15 training on a regular basis, has managed to have 5 students, along with another 5 students from the Miriam Vale / Agnes Water Club, gain selection into the Australian Squad for the 2013 World Championships in Spain. The HADEN 2011 Bundaberg Cup this year also has attracted the attention Mr Frans Christensen, Head Coach for the Australian ITF team. “It is exciting to hear that Mr Christensen will be making the trip to Bundaberg this year. He has spent a lot of time travelling to different countries studying their training regimes’ and developing these to ensure our standards are of equal or better standard at World Championships.” McGaw said.

Action for the HADEN 2011 Bundaberg Cup will kick off at the Bundaberg Basketball stadium in Flint Street, with Competitor Weigh in at 9am, and the tournament commencing at 9.30am with the Patterns Division followed by Sparring and the day finishing with the Men’s and Women’s Power Breaking

IMG_0015Report on the Bundaberg and Miriam Vale/Agnes Water Master Class.

Well what a perfect start to the weekend. Woke up to find it was not raining, there was a gentle breeze and pleasant conditions for a change. The day started with Master Daher arriving at the airport not knowing if he was being picked up (in his words) “a truck or a tractor”… Sorry Sir the John Deere was in for a service.

For some students it was their first taste of tournament sparing.

Master Daher outlined 6 techniques in total.

The first sequence Master Daher demonstrated the opponent coming forward with a sliding/stepping side kick. You would, instead of moving backwards, step to the side with the back foot executing a  front leg side piercing kick. It wasn’t until about half way through the demonstration that the assistant (“Guinea Pig”) Mr Lane realised, after Sir’s kicks getting harder, that when demonstrating with the master you don’t actually touch. Nice one John.

The second attack of the day was very similar except for instead of stepping across with the back leg we stepped across with our front foot and counter attacked with a rear foot turning kick.

The Third of the program was similar again but this time the counter attack or reaction was to jump forward and slightly to the side with a jumping double punch. This particular technique I felt I struggled with which I think I can only put down to not being flexible enough.

IMG_0026The next combination, which is probably my one of my favourites, was the opponent coming forward with a rear foot turning kick and we would react with a jumping back kick. This was also the same counter attack used should the opponent follow on with a jumping double punch except the defender steps back with the front leg for the first attack (Turning Kick) and then when the opponent continues with a jumping double punch you step back with the now front leg executing a jumping back kick as foot moves back and touches the ground. Another variation to this is as your opponent continues to approach with a jumping double punch you actually jump first and complete your double punch before you opponent commencing their jumping punches.

Students were then given the opportunities to incorporate these techniques into their own style of sparing and it was very interesting to see how these were then implemented.

Master Daher then conducted the grading and finished the day with a quick demonstration on where and why students where struggling with their jumping kicks and in particular their jumping back kick. It was demonstrated as to why the lack of height and momentum was cause. In most cases this was because the non kicking leg was left dangling under the body. Where as if they were bring this leg up to tuck the foot under the backside with the knee as high as possible, this would assist them with height and assist with the time in the air (Hang Time as I call it).

Gradings were different this time round and I think caught some off guard. Grading started with the senior belts first and included the assistant instructors on the floor and as Master DaherIMG_0137 pointed out we ALL have to work on our training in some form. It was then back to the White Belts and then worked up the ranks. It was great to see the effort put in by the majority of the student and there were some outstanding results and unfortunately there will also be some disappointed students.

Results for the Bundaberg Club were as follows

Benjamin Pratt                    White Belt                                             Promoted to          White Belt Yellow Stripe

Peter Wein                             White Belt                                             Promoted to          9th Kup

Stefania Barbera                 White Belt Yellow Stripe                    Promoted to          Yellow Belt White Stripe

Janine Mewburn                  9th Kup                                                   Promoted to          8th Kup

Alexandria Barbera            8th Kup                                                   Promoted to          7th Kup

Perry Nixon                           8th Kup                                                   Promoted to          7th Kup

Alicia Lane                           8th Kup                                                   Promoted to          2nd Kup

A special mention should also go to

Chelsea Barbera                  White Belt Yellow Stripe                    Promoted to          8th Kup

Steffani O’Rreal-Avery      White Belt Yellow Stripe                    Promoted to          8th Kup

Hayden McGaw                  White Belt                                             Promoted to          8th Kup

Well done guys on you double promotion.

I think from the improvement that I saw during the course of the day there will be some serious contenders at the Sunshine Coast Cup and quite possibly 2013 selections.

LOOK OUT GUYS WE’RE COMING…………..

Master Daher, 8th Degree Black Belt, commenced the day by explaining the difference between performing techniques within our patterns compared to using these techniques whilst sparring. Probably the most important  factors to keep in mind would be that with Patterns we look at and concentrate on the preparation of the kick before delivering it, whereas in sparring the importance is on the speed of the delivery and reaction time.

Master Daher also demonstrated the importance of using defensive techniques to your advantage. The simplicity of moving sideways and using a dodging technique or jumping forward with a punching technique enables the competitor to achieve optimum results.

2

In performing this exercise the students needed to develop the skill of reading their opponent. Competitors were to look their opponent in the eye without the use of any facial expressions. By performing this you are signalling to your opponent that you are ready and that you are not scared. Master Daher’s goal here was to pair students against each other to see who would be the first to cave in.

3

The students then paired up. The attacker would come forward with a turning kick to their opponent’s midriff. The defender then jumps forward defensively and slightly to the side of the attacker, landing a double punch while in flight. By leading with the front fist the aim was to ensure that when landing they didn’t turn to face the attacker but rather continue in the same direction to avoid a counter attack by the attacker.

4

Master Daher then demonstrated a variation to this by the use of the back kick. The secret to the success of this technique, as in the previous technique, is that the counter-attack needs to be performed before the attacker’s front leg touches the ground, avoiding the attacker’s follow-on. When comparing the first two techniques they both have their advantages. With the jumping double punch, you are able to leave yourself in a position where you can continue with the counter-attack, whereas with the back kick as the counter-attack you remove your opponent’s scoring opportunity by legally turning your back.

Students were then given the opportunity to add to these techniques in free sparing. It was good to see that some of the younger students were modifying techniques to suit themselves and optimise their scoring opportunities, for example adding the jump to the back kick (for increased points) or adding further punches (to avoid a second counter-attack).

5

Students then were split into two teams where they were matched against each other for a taste of sparring. It was interesting to see how they reacted when put up against someone other than their training partner, especially when it came to mother and son/daughter competing against each other. For the newer students, it was even more daunting to be in a ring with everyone watching compared to training with a training partner.

6

Master Daher finished the day off with some fundamental training. It was pleasing to hear students and parents comment on how much they enjoyed the seminar. With this grounding I look forward to seeing these students develop their skills and compete well at future Tournaments.

Sunday saw the 2nd grading for 2010 take place. This grading was mainly attended by the junior grade belts, with approx 20 students grading. Once grading proceedings were complete, Master Daher took the opportunity to take the students through their new patterns. It was quite interesting to see how quickly Master Daher was able to teach the pattern while still being thorough in technique. Once again the use of repetition to build muscle memory was proven to be a key factor.

With the current changes that have occurred in the Bundaberg club, the increase in students from simple promotions, and the new structure that Master Daher is implementing across the organisation, 2010 I feel is shaping up to be a very successful year.

Following a successful weekend Master Daher received the following positive feedback:

“This is my first seminar and I found it has opened my eyes to how much I’m yet to learn and what I have learnt through this seminar.

I plan to take away and go further with in; my future grading, tournaments and my patterns.

So I thank Master Daher for all his help.

On another note I had a great time and look forward to the next one!”

“I attended the seminar not knowing what I would get out of it, but I found myself learning a whole lot.

Every technique we were shown and then practiced came together and made sense.

I am feeling a little sore and stiff but that shows me I put as much effort as I could into it.

Thanks Master Daher for your time and expertise for this seminar.”
