Review on the General Choi Cup from Nathan Tyson.
The 2011 General Choi Cup was a resounding success. With over 60 entrants the competition was fierce.  All competitors displayed both a passion to succeed and a respect for their opponents that embodied the tenets of Taekwon-do: Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self-Control and Indomitable Spirit.DSC02724
I did not have the privilege of meeting the founder of Taekwon-Do, General Choi, but from what I’ve read and what I’ve heard from Master Daher, General Choi would have been pleased with the spirit shown by all competitors, instructors, referees and officials.
There was a high standard of competition in all events. Some of the highlights – the female black belt pattern division was hotly contested with a very high technical standard. The men’s black belt sparring was awesome with all spectators enjoying an at times breathtaking display…a special mention goes to Mr Trent Hayden from Il Shim Aberdeen, who is both an amazing competitor and a wonderful role model for our students. Congratulations to Mr Hayden for winning both his sparring and special technique divisions.

I would also like to thank all of the first time competitors who have now taken the first (and often most difficult) step in their competitive careers. Well done!
A number of first-time competitors also placed in their divisions – congratulations to Daniel Rivers (3rd) and Luke Tyson (1st) in their male junior coloured belt sparring divisions.
I would finally like to thank the many people who assisted with all of the duties that made the event a success: Master Daher for his wisdom, guidance and support, Mr Abdallah and Mr Sutton, Mr Weston, Mr Cariotis and Mr Gabrielides, Mr Dwight, Ms Dann, Mr and Mrs Hayden, Mr Christensen, Mr and Mrs Harper, Mr Kelly, Mr Van Beelen, Mr Steve Harper, Mr McGaw, Mr Ferguson, Mr Batterham, and all who helped carry chairs, set up rings and do corner umpiring and marshalling duties. And to parents who brought their
children along, and spectators who came along to support their friends. A huge thank you to all!
Next years event will be even bigger and better so keep your eyes on the website for all the details.
