General Choi Cup 2011

12th February 2011

Venue: National Centre for Indigenous Excellence. The venue for this event was extremely suited for sporting activities like Taekwon-Do, the facility was clean, safe and secure. The shop kiosk was well stocked and manned by adequate staff, making it very pleasant surroundings. I look forward to many more events at this place in the future.

The morning of the tournament was perfect as the competitors rolled up to enter and weigh in. Once the rings were set, all competitors lined up for the opening and introductions and then the tournament began. We were running to a very tight schedule and we knew we would have no time to rest if we were to complete on time. Everyone must be congratulated for their efforts in assisting for this to happen, which enabled us to start right on time. Firstly with the patterns, colour and black belts, all competing to take out a placing, the determination and commitment from the competitors was truly impressive.

The sparring component of any tournament is probably considered the most exciting and interesting part, as the competitors prepared themselves with their protective equipment and trying to shake off the nerves that they were experiencing. Once in the ring it is game on and they will use all the knowledge that they have learnt from training and put it into action.

The competition was fierce, with everyone looking to take out the 1st place trophy in their division. The outstanding display of courage, respect for their opponent and their ability was an impressive sight to see. Even though some divisions were small in number resulting in some having a physical advantage, the bouts were well controlled to eliminate injury. Even though they may not have won a trophy, they have won more than that, they have learnt that the experience is by far, more beneficial than any trophy.

The special techniques were also an amazing sight, with a display of extraordinary abilities to reach the specified targets, some with ease and some disappointed knowing they should have done better, as the targets are pushed higher and higher eliminating one by one, until finally we are left with the 3 final placing.

In all the General Choi Cup has been a success, and will continue to grow with the support of our members and instructors, hope to see you all at our next event.

Congratulations to our students from Toongabbie who competed in the General Choi Cup on 12 February 2011 –
Marlee Tyson, Luke Tyson, Daniel Rivers and Megh Araveeti. All students gave their best and should be proud of their achievements.
For Daniel, Megh and Luke this was their first tournament, so well done for taking that first step into competition.
I am also very pleased to be able to report that Daniel Rivers placed 3rd in his division of Junior Coloured Belt Sparring, and Luke Tyson placed 1st in his division of Junior Coloured Belt Sparring. Well done Daniel and Luke!!
Congratulations also to Marlee Tyson who has been training with the Australian Squad to compete in the female Team Pattern division at next month’s ITF World Championships in New Zealand. A team training session was held on Sunday 13th February and the team have been training hard and are looking forward to the event.

The General Choi Cup is an event I have not missed since I started back with Taekwon-Do after a break of ten years. this time was to be my first not competing however so i had the opportunity to give back to the art that has given so much to me.

As i had only recently hosted my first tournament, i knew what a mammoth effort was required from the organiser Mr Tyson. The venue was fantastic and thanks must go to the traditional owners of that land for providing us with the opportunity to compete there.

The patterns divisions for the coloured belts finished rapidly and sparring was underway before we knew it. The black belt division was HUGE and took a bit longer than expected but was also finished only slightly behind the original schedule.

The overall spirit and competitiveness of ALL competitors was just fantastic and it goes to show that Taekwon-Do really does bring out the best in people.

A big thanks must of course go to Mr Tyson and Mr Abdallah for the great job they clearly did, but also to Mr Harper and Mr Christenson who both did a fantastic job in keeping things running on time ensuring that the tournament was indeed successful.

All in all a great time was had by all and the team training the next day was extremely productive!

Review on the General Choi Cup from Nathan Tyson.
The 2011 General Choi Cup was a resounding success. With over 60 entrants the competition was fierce.  All competitors displayed both a passion to succeed and a respect for their opponents that embodied the tenets of Taekwon-do: Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self-Control and Indomitable Spirit.DSC02724
I did not have the privilege of meeting the founder of Taekwon-Do, General Choi, but from what I’ve read and what I’ve heard from Master Daher, General Choi would have been pleased with the spirit shown by all competitors, instructors, referees and officials.
There was a high standard of competition in all events. Some of the highlights – the female black belt pattern division was hotly contested with a very high technical standard. The men’s black belt sparring was awesome with all spectators enjoying an at times breathtaking display…a special mention goes to Mr Trent Hayden from Il Shim Aberdeen, who is both an amazing competitor and a wonderful role model for our students. Congratulations to Mr Hayden for winning both his sparring and special technique divisions.

I would also like to thank all of the first time competitors who have now taken the first (and often most difficult) step in their competitive careers. Well done!
A number of first-time competitors also placed in their divisions – congratulations to Daniel Rivers (3rd) and Luke Tyson (1st) in their male junior coloured belt sparring divisions.
I would finally like to thank the many people who assisted with all of the duties that made the event a success: Master Daher for his wisdom, guidance and support, Mr Abdallah and Mr Sutton, Mr Weston, Mr Cariotis and Mr Gabrielides, Mr Dwight, Ms Dann, Mr and Mrs Hayden, Mr Christensen, Mr and Mrs Harper, Mr Kelly, Mr Van Beelen, Mr Steve Harper, Mr McGaw, Mr Ferguson, Mr Batterham, and all who helped carry chairs, set up rings and do corner umpiring and marshalling duties. And to parents who brought their
children along, and spectators who came along to support their friends. A huge thank you to all!
Next years event will be even bigger and better so keep your eyes on the website for all the details.
