On Saturday the 30th of August IL Shim Melbourne hosted an IL Shim squad training session prior to the ITF Victorian Challenge tournament. The training session was conducted by Mr Frans Christensen (V degree) and Mr Gerard Kelly (IV degree).

The warm up commenced with some general loosening up but we quickly moved into stretching. We then ran through strengthening exercises for the adductor muscles. Adductor strength helps to keep the front leg up for quick sidekicks.

The sparring drills included front leg sidekicks to a target and then moved onto hook kicks. I particularly liked this drill as the aim is to score points as well as drawing a warning for being kicked in the back. The opponent uses a turning kick off the rear leg, to counter a hook kick is used off the rear leg. The hook kick allows you to turn inside the turning kick which then strikes the back.

We then moved onto the “Bull Rush” or blitz punching, first with one front jab and then onto using both hands.

We then moved onto more advanced drills to try and suck the opponent into jumping back kick. The premise was to use a front leg turning kick, follow through and turn the back to your opponent. The opponent seeing an opportunity to attack is then set up for a jumping back kick.

The session ran for 3 hours and we covered a lot of drills useful in tournament sparring. It was a tough but very beneficial workout prior to the tournament on the Sunday.

Melbourne Umpiring Course report – Report by Gerard Kelly IL Shim Sunshine Coast

On the eve of the first IL Shim Victorian Challenge an umpire course was held to continue IL Shims dedication to educating members on correct umpiring procedures and techniques. This first season of seminars was mainly about the basics as most participants had never refereed at all, so we started at the very beginning. For the moment specific rules are not thoroughly covered as we need to know what to say and how to say it, before we really get into why you should be saying it.

Terminology was once again covered as this is so important to becoming a proficient umpire. Signals were also covered as again this is essential to being understood by all competitors. After the theory component was completed, the practical session was introduced. In this part we got every participant to go though the process of stopping the fight, giving the warning, and starting the bout in the most efficient manner.

Once everyone got over their nerves, they started to enjoy themselves and got used to the system. I would like to thank all the participants for their time and must urge as many people as possible to give it a go as we need as many trained umpires as possible, for without them, there is no tournament!!

Aberdeen Master Class – August 2011

On Wednesday 27th of July Master Daher conducted a Master class at Aberdeen ILShim club. Many of the new students were “first timers” for a seminar with Master Daher and were full of nerves, not knowing what to expect.

The seminar was a mix of revision on some of the basic techniques that we had learned during previous Master Classes, followed by some more advanced self defence moves that really had everyone “rolling around on the floor”. Master Daher demonstrated a number of scenarios, followed by moves that were extremely effective at controlling an attacker. As these were more advanced moves, it was made very clear to the younger ones that some of these techniques were only to be practiced under supervision in class, “not at home on your brother or sister”.  It was a rare privilege indeed, to see Master Daher in full flight whilst demonstrating some of these techniques, and to witness just how capable this man really is.

With a twisted sense of humour, a great indication of how well the class went was the amount of stiff and sore bodies reported over the next few days. As always everyone who participated in the seminar left feeling that they had really enjoyed the day and couldn’t wait until the next “Master class”.

Mark Trotter and Carl Van Roon Seminar –  Report by Gerard Kelly IL Shim Sunshine Coast

The 16th of July saw two world champions from New Zealand conduct a seminar on the Sunshine Coast. Mark Trotter IV Dan and Carl Van Roon II Dan imparted some of the techniques that they have accumulated through years of travel and competition.

Right from the warm ups it was clear that we were in for a great day as the energy these two have was infectious. The games they had us doing were a great indication of the direction the seminar was to go. Focusing mainly on sparring, the leg drills that Mr Trotter had us doing would nonetheless help in many areas of Taekwon-do. It was obvious how many hours were put into these drills as Mr Trotter has fantastic control and technique with his legs.

But it was not all about legs however, and soon we were doing drills to help with timing and distance, very important for sparring!!! As we moved though the progression of techniques it became clear how easy it is to set up your opponent if you give them a reason to attack. The drills were effective and easy to remember. (Not to mention lots of fun too!)

Time passed all too quickly, however and it was time for lunch (thanks subway Nambour!!!) Some quick refreshments and a sit down and it was time for Mr Van Roons’ section.

Mr Van Roon took over where Mr Trotter left off and continued that theme of deception to entice your opponent into doing what you want them to do. Different ways of attacking were covered including the blitz, which was like a wave breaking, in that you back off then explode forwards in a flurry of motion and attacks. It was clear to see that true fighting is not just about muscle or strength, but your brains and how you play your opponent.

All in all it was a great day, with all participants enjoying themselves and getting something from the day, from the white belts to the 4th dans! I would like to thank both Mr Trotter and Mr Van Roon for giving their time to be with us and we look forward to seeing you again! Thanks must also go to Mr Abdallah who helped out considerably with the organisation and to Master Daher for green lighting the seminar!
