Melbourne Umpiring Course report – Report by Gerard Kelly IL Shim Sunshine Coast

On the eve of the first IL Shim Victorian Challenge an umpire course was held to continue IL Shims dedication to educating members on correct umpiring procedures and techniques. This first season of seminars was mainly about the basics as most participants had never refereed at all, so we started at the very beginning. For the moment specific rules are not thoroughly covered as we need to know what to say and how to say it, before we really get into why you should be saying it.

Terminology was once again covered as this is so important to becoming a proficient umpire. Signals were also covered as again this is essential to being understood by all competitors. After the theory component was completed, the practical session was introduced. In this part we got every participant to go though the process of stopping the fight, giving the warning, and starting the bout in the most efficient manner.

Once everyone got over their nerves, they started to enjoy themselves and got used to the system. I would like to thank all the participants for their time and must urge as many people as possible to give it a go as we need as many trained umpires as possible, for without them, there is no tournament!!
