Luke and Amba have been training at our club for about 3 and 2 years respectively. Although young and rubbery already they have shown great commitment in getting their flexibility to improve.

Luke and amba train nearly every night on their stretching and it shows! Luke is very keen and wants to grade for his black belt and has been doing extra training at home to ensure he gets there! Amba although still very young shows that with continued training she will be an excellent sparer as she has that killer instinct!

Kick Off Camp – 29th & 30th January 2011 – Gold Coast

kick__off_camp_2011

In 2008 the organisation decided to run a special new event to kick off the start of a new training year, this became known as the Kick Off Camp, held at the end of January for the last 2 years and for years to come. 2009 saw 35 practitioners attend; the highlight of the event is the Mystery Instructor who is unknown until they appear on the first morning of the event. 2009 saw Nelson Toiune as the Mystery Instructor. 2010 saw the event grow to 70 Participants, with Master McPhail from New Zealand attend as the Mystery Instructor. Check out the 2009 and 2010 Kickoff Camps (click on the year to view review and photos)

For 2011 we are expecting over 100 participants with the Mystery Instructor still unknown to anyone other than Master Daher. Master McPhail enjoyed the 2010 event so much he has decided to attend again in 2011. Click here for more information

Over the 2 days many different methods are used to train the students, from stamina work in the sand, to training in the water in full dobok, the students are put through their paces in patterns, sparring, situps, pushups, self defence techniques – all in the water at different depths. Games like soccer are adapted to suit making the kick off camp a fun weekend mixing taekwondo training and games.

For 2012 the camp will extend to 3 days over the Australia Day weekend, the camp will finish on Sunday with the inaugural Kick Off Camp Challenge – where teams or clubs verse each other in team based events. More information to follow……

Both Redlands Bay and Sunshine Coast Instructors and their students joined in this combined grading.

The master class theme was self defense.  Master Daher took the Instructors and students through four different self defense moves.

The grading was attended by twenty-two students, three of which Graded to Black Belt; one of which was Shawn Sutton.

To add to the atmosphere NBN TV arrived.  Master Daher along with Mr. Kelly (Sunshine Coast), Mr. Abdallah, and several handpicked students provided an impromptu demonstration.  Master Daher, Mr. Kelly and Shawn Sutton were interviewed.

Master Daher is an internationally renowned Master Instructor; to be graded by him is a great honor and privilege.  All his students are internationally recognised.

As the Head of the Australia Team Master Daher handpicked thirteen students to join the Australian Senior and Junior Teams. Nine are from the Gold Coast ages varying from 10 – 38 years.

The three girls and three boys from the Gold Coast chosen to represent their country who are now on the Junior Team Squad include: Sebastian de Viana, Amelia de Viana, Paris Lumsden, Jessie Lumsden , Lauren Bellikoff and the youngest, Alex Pearce who is 10 years of age. The three Senior Squad members are Justin Cernoy (17), Ross Guy, and Shawn Sutton.  It was awesome to be assisting Master Daher and seeing the excitement and pride these students demonstrated. What a great way to end the year!

The grading finished with the announcement of Gold Coast Student of the year award for 2010 that went to Shawn Sutton for his dedication to training and commitment to Il Shim Gold Coast.  Runner-up Most Improved Award was won by Millie de Viana for her dedication to training and Alex Pearce received the Achievement Award for his perseverance and indomitable spirit.  Also, Jennifer and Daniel de Viana were recipients of the Merit Award for their ongoing support and promotion of our club.

The event closed with Master Daher receiving his Christmas Gift.  He appeared to be a little surprised, however pleased.

The days event was huge, but what a day.  Il Shim Gold Coast has had a great year.  And it appears 2011 will be busier with the addition of squad training so rest up and John and I will look forward to seeing everyone back in January ready to go!  And don’t forget to register for the 2011 Kickoff Camp.

On behalf of Mr. Abdallah and myself, Merry Christmas and best wishes’ for a healthy, safe and prosperous New Year.

Warmest regards

Michelle Keenan 3rd Degree

On Saturday the 11th of December we had the pleasure of hosting Master Daher who provided us with our 2nd Masterclass followed by our December Grading.
We also welcomed visiting instructor Mr Dave Proctor from Traralgon, who was kind enough to bring with him 2 of his students, Sarah and Shane,

The Masterclass covered the first four defences from a new Self Defence syllabus. The moves were explained thoroughly, point by point and then
practiced by all students. The moves were simple yet very effective and even our younger students grasped the moves very quickly. Overall the new

self defence syllabus was met with much enthusiasm and we look forward to implementing it during classes for next year.

We then moved onto the Grading which saw Mr Bryan Dance grade to 1st Degree
Black Belt. He describes his journey to Black Belt as ’16 years, five clubs, two countries, countless bruises, and a few fractures later……”

Standout performances included Leiana Keogh, Ingrid Wood, Jon Grandin, Mitch Sammut and Mickey Thomas. We also had a number of students offered positions on the Il Shim Squad for
the 2013 World Championships which was fantastic.

On the 12th of December, Master Daher along with Mr Paul Harper travelled to Stawell to oversee the second Master Class and Grading for the Stawell Club. The students were keen to finish off the year with a bang and had worked hard to achieve what they have in 2010.

The focus for our second Master Class was Self defence. Master Daher ran through four scenarios and broke down each into easy to remember steps. The smiles on the students faces confirmed that they were certainly enjoying the training. Every class will now incorporate these new self defence techniques to hone the students abilities.

The grading commenced after the Master Class and there were quite a few anxious students. Master Daher commenced the grading session highlighting the need for power and hard work. During the grading Master Daher focussed on the need for a long walking stance. Each student was implored to take a positive outlook on Master Daher’s comments regarding their technique.

To finish off the grading Mr Steve Harper, was awarded his Second Degree black belt by Master Daher after grading at the Black Belt grading on the Gold Coast in September 2010.

The students of Stawell look forward to learning their new patterns and self defence techniques and will welcome Master Daher back for the next grading to be held in April 2011.

On Wednesday the 10th of November, Aberdeen had their first Master Class. I can easily say it was a complete success. Almost all of our members were able to attend, some with a bit of apprehension about what to expect, as this was for most of them their first Seminar with Master Daher.

We started the seminar with self defence technique. We learned about techniques to release from an attacker if grabbed by the wrist, elbow and shoulder.  After a bit of confusion, and with practice we slowly got through this. It really is something that we will need to practise many times so that it becomes a subconscious “reaction” movement. I know everybody really enjoyed this part of the seminar.

We then moved onto reviewing some of the kicks and it was back to basics. We all needed to practice this as over time the correct technique can easily be lost. So we worked on side- piercing kick, turning kick and back kick “movement by movement”. I know this was really important and it encouraged everyone in the class to really think about what they were doing, how to do it correctly and why it is important to do it that way, rather than just throwing the kick out there.

Master Daher was a very good and patient instructor. I know everyone came away feeling very good about what they did and will be looking forward to the next Master Class.

Thankyou Master Daher.

The 5 girls; Lisa Mundy, Cassandra Dowling, Miranda Young, Lydia Wolke and Agata Kahan, enlisted the help of a local Martial Arts Club and through a search of the web they came across us. Once making contact they presented me with what they wanted to achieve and we were more than happy to help out. Our involvement would be to hopefully encourage the school students to take up Taekwon-Do as a good source for reaching their goals.

I approached 16 year old Justin Cernoy as he is one of our senior belts (red / black tip) to help out with the presentation, he eagerly accepted the challenge. Once we arrived and met with the girls they were all very keen to get things started. We were then presented with the group of students that had no idea of what they were in for. The School Teacher sat the group down and gave them a stern warning to pay attention and show us the respect that we deserve and that they did. The girls began their presentation by talking about the importance of exercise and eating healthy, once they had finished they threw to Justin and I to do our bit. The only thing going through my head at that stage was to command the audience and gain their respect, which was successfully achieved. Wasting no time I put together a small wrestling contest, pairing each of them up equally until elimination and only one winner. Next we followed up with a circuit style class which included a workout of punching and kicking onto small targets, to raise their heart rates. 15 mins of that was just about enough for most of them including our hosts and before they knew it they were actually exercising. For some this was a new experience and a stepping stone towards a healthier lifestyle.

Justin and I finished off with a display of patterns and board breaking to give it a bit of wow factor.

I would like to thank, the girls from Griffith University and Musgrave Hill Primary for allowing us to bring our techniques, also Justin Cernoy for his contribution to the event.

Black Belt Grading Report – 2010

Michelle Keenan 3rd Dan, Assistant Head IL Shim Gold Coast

 Behind the Scenes

Last weekend, 25-26 September, IL Shim Gold Coast hosted Master Daher, Black Belt grading applicants and their families.

Organization for this event commenced 3 months earlier with Mr Abdallah   organizing the venue with catering.   We then began to list all the extras to make this event exciting, comfortable and successful.

Accommodation for Master Daher , Catering, Amenities for the participants, First Aid,  media alert, Refreshments/coffee, set-up/take down, photography and video, accessories such, tape, and plastic bags to make ice packs if needed.

Fortunately, the venue offered an affordable catering package.  This price included light lunch of sandwiches, fruit and warm food; also tea and coffee, juice, ice and water.

On the Friday afternoon Miss Madeline Keenan (utilizing her IT expertise)and I organized and released to TV,  radio and newspapers a media alert about the event.

On the Saturday Mr Abdallah and I arrived one hour earlier to set up. This also allowed time to reflect and assess the day’s events on what other items may be required. On the way there I received a telephone call from John saying Master Daher wanted to utilize a white board, and did I have the white board markers.  I took great pride in informing John to relax, that I had the white board markers (from the IIC 2006 course)

IL Shim Gold Coast is so fortunate to have the extraordinary IT talent in Mr Shawn Sutton.  Mr Sutton took all the photos and worked with Mr and Mrs Hayden with video.  Mr Sutton also organized all the uploading of information to the IL Shim website.

The Official table was arranged, covered with a black table cloth with the IL Shim Flag pinned in place.  On the table we placed water bottle, pens, paper, white board markers(fortunately the venue had other colours) and for a finishing touch we placed a platter with dates, nuts dried fruit and (a gift from Madeline) lollies.

Master Daher arrived.  The first challenge was transposing the information about foot and shoulder movement on the board.  I was challenged by trying to draw lines straight.  Mr Abdallah was writing on the other side.  We discovered that his writing the same time we couldn’t just flip the board.  Note to self for next time.  Do one side at a time so Master Daher can flip the whiteboard over!

And of course, making sure Master Daher had his coffee double espresso and one sugar!

The grading commenced with review of all patterns, hand, and foot and shoulder movement.

During the morning session with all the photos being taken, more batteries were required.  I was able to procure the batteries by running to the store. Again, note to self have extra double AA batteries.

Lunch was served and well received by all.

The afternoon session continues with review of 1st and 2nd Degree patterns.  As always I learn and gain better insight to each movement.  I gained enormous confidence with all six of these patterns.

Afternoon tea was served fruit and cakes tea and coffee (once milk was located) ( I discovered another little fridge in the hall again note to self ).  The things you learn when organizing an event!

Patterns continued after the break.  Once 2nd Degree patterns were completed, day one closed at 5.45 Pm.  All participants left feeling exhausted however pleased with the efforts during the day.

Sunday, day two,  I arrived at the venue 7 Am for 8 Am commencement.  It’s past 7.30 and no Mr Abdallah.  The mobile rings its John “I just got down the street and Master Daher rang he wants a black pen, scissors and glue, I had to go back for it”.  I smiled and I said “John, I have those items already so he’ll be pleased with two of everything!”  Mental note to self: always carry the pencil case make sure glue, scissors and black pen along with double AA batteries and whiteboard markers!

Day two commenced with 3rd degree and above patterns. (Making sure Master Daher had his coffee) I was challenged as I am learning these at the moment.  I was humbled being on the floor with the 4th Degrees, Mr Harper and Mr Christiansen.  Master Daher demonstrated his expertise in body movement.  And again I gain a better understanding of both the techniques well as their meaning.

With the patterns completed and after a short break, the grading continued with a fantastic display of board breaking.

Clearing the floor of wood fragments Master Daher continued with the fitness test.  What a demonstration of determination and indomitable spirit by all participants!

The morning concluded with awards ceremony.   All applicants were successful.  Although there were no applicants for the grading from the Gold Coast Il Shim, I did receive my 3ed Degree ITF Certificate from December 2009 and Mr Sutton received his promotion to 1st Kup.

With the grading over, the clean up was organized.  Thank you to all the participants for the assistance.  And I would like to say a big thank you to Mr Shawn Sutton and Gail and Ken Hayden for the IT and video support.  Thank you too to Mr John Abdallah, its always great working with John,; keeping up with Master Daher is one thing, Mr Abdallah challenges me to think pro actively and I really appreciate his natural ability to problem solve whilst keeping a sense of humour.

Finally, thank you to Master Daher.  I appreciate every opportunity to work with him.  Continuous learning is the ingredient to success and development: To be trained and graded by Master Daher is a great honour and privilege.

Kind regards,

Michelle Keenan 3rd Degree

The 8am start on the Sunday saw quite a few sore bodies back on the floor. I had woken in the middle of the night with a cramp running down the inside of my hamstring. OUCH! We were all quite fatigued Sunday morning, our thoughts while we worked on our step sparring routines were with our seniors still on the floor performing 3rd and 4th degree patterns. I found my core was quite stiff and sore as well as hamstrings and quads. Po Eun sitting stances had been worked on for quite a while the day before! After the 3rd and 4th degree patterns were completed we ran though some step sparring and breaking. We finished off the 2 day session with a fitness test. Nothing could prepare any of us for this. Our heart rates were maxed out multiple times!

The entire grading was a physical and mental challenge. Everyone was thoroughly exhausted but each of us certainly earnt our promotion. As Master Daher had told us during the grading we were the first (but not the last!) to earn a black belt promotion over two days. Il Shim is the only organisation to run black belt grading over two days. The experience was something each of us will remember for the rest of our lives. Master Daher has promised that the next black belt grading will be even harder. I am already looking forward to my next grading.

Thanks to Master Daher in his guidance and advice over my years of training. I would also like to thank my brother Paul and sister in law Michelle. Finally, I would also like to thank my wife Catherine for her support and my children Amber (especially for being my step sparring partner!), Rose and Zavier. Also a special mention to my constant canine companion when I get up to train at 5.45am five days a week! Thanks Hannah!

Recovery after the grading consisted of relaxing in a swimming pool, well earnt I believe!
