The Sunshine Coast Cup has come and gone for 2012 and saw the introduction of the Round Robin System into the sparring event, which seemed to be a success. We ran the sparring this way for the first time, after getting some valuable feedback from Mr Ken Hayden, with his experience travelling to other countries where they run their events this way. The reason for taking on this type of system gives all competitors equal chance of the first place trophy. Each competitor competes against each other, scoring 2 points for the win and 1 for a draw. The Jury records flags for and against and also notes down the warnings in the event of multiple wins in a single division. If by chance there are multiple competitors on the same score, a playoff for either 1st and 2nd or 2nd and 3rd is held to confirm the placing’s. The other advantage is that competitors travelling from other countries or interstate will be assured of more than 1 fight, even though they lose their 1st fight. Each division has only 6 competitors giving a minimum of 5 fights each in a full division. The senior Dan’s did 1 x 2min round, the colour belts 1 ½ min and the juniors 1min round.

The medal presentation saw the introduction of the David Cassidy award for the most spirited competitor which went to Jessie Lumsden. This award means a great deal to IL Shim members and in particular the Sunshine Coast Club. David Cassidy was a highly devoted and well respected member of IL Shim. With his passing, this award is a way of remembering him and carrying on his good spirit and awarding it to the one that shows they are worthy of this great award, congratulations Jessie.

A great day was had by all and as we now prepare for the next IL Shim tournament in Aberdeen, I would like to thank everyone for their support in making these events safe and fun for all ages.

See you all at our next event.

Kind regards

Gen. Choi and Master Daher

Dear ITF Members and Masters,

This 15th of June marks 10 years since the passing away of General Choi Hong Hi. We pause for a heartfelt homage and to thank his wonderful legacy.

I wish to share this reflection with you, for it has been quite a long while since his demise, during which our institutGen. Choi and Master Daherion´s work capacity has been put to test, and become able to draw most international TKD practitioners to our ranks.

It is precisely the term line that I want to address: when our founder passed away, three lines became defined, which in order  to identify themselves were called thus: Tran Trieu Quan Line, Chang Ung  Line and  Choi Jong Haw Line. After the loss of dear  GM Tran Trieu Quan, many  members invoke my name as a new way to call our line. However, I think it is time we took what rightfully belongs to us and become known as the “Gen. Choi Hong Hi Line”.

Owing to  the fact that our entity is not monarchic but that it is democratic and therefore time will force us to renew our Presidents (for no more than two periods are allowed), this would force us to successive changes in name to ratify our Line and moreover, because we know that we are heirs to the ITF  legacy and our approach would fill our predecessors with pride.

We will simply employ this name whenever we need to refer to ourselves, as well as in the web or in a journalistic interview, we will do it in this way:  ¨General Choi Hong Hi Line”; and it  will be the best tribute possible to our Founder

Warm regards,

Pablo Trajtenberg

Once again the sunshine coast hosted Master Michael Daher 8th dan, for a master class and grading. Once again the students and myself were treated to an exceptional seminar on sparring drills that flowed so seamlessly from one technique to the next.

The importance of practicing these drills was emphasised as there would be no progress without effort! The drills really do work and i proved this in hobart in sparring where every point that I scored came from drills Master Daher had showed me.

The grading that followed, although smaller tha i would have liked, was, i think, one of the best we have had for a while. Master Daher would have liked to have failed my students on stances, but could not as they were perfect!!! We have really been focusing on this lately and it showed! next thing is foot shape though!!

All in all it was a great day and thanks must go again to Master Daher for his tireless efforts in travelling to all of our clubs!

As usual, tension was high amongst the students grading, with 3 students sitting their assessment as a lead up to the black belt grading in August. At the start Master Daher always likes to set the students at ease when it comes to a grading, as he believes it brings out the best in them.

This time around the Master Class focused on tournament sparring, with the increased number of tournaments available, it was obvious it was needed. All the students responded well and were very pleased with what they were able to get out of it. The class was high energy and required a great deal of focus to stay up with the technique being taught. This set the pace for the grading that was to follow. The students did an outstanding job to prove their place in the belt ranking system and also showed off their instructors knowledge with the technique they have been taught.

I believe that each time we have a grading the standard increases and the ability is becoming more obvious that soon we will have some very good students up for selection for the world championship teams.

I would like to thank the efforts from Master Daher, the parents for their encouragement and support and also the students for giving their very best.

Every year around the end of march, the town of Skovde in Sweden plays host to one of the most popular and important ITF Taekwon-Do tournaments in Europe. The Viking Cup International attracts many of the biggest stars from around the world, and they use this tournament as a warm up for the European Championships in the following month. One of the most attractive aspects of the Viking Cup is the use of a “pool system” for the sparring draw, rather than the more conventional “pyramid” knockout draw. The pool system means that each division of competitors are divided into “pools” of up to five people who fight all of the other individuals in their pool, with the highest two point scoring competitors progressing into the next round. This unique system means that everyone is guaranteed to get multiple fights regardless of the results. Of course this is a huge attraction for everyone, particularly if contemplating a significant outlay in both cost and time to travel to an event for potentially only one match. As a result this tournament is supported by countries, teams, and individuals from all over the world.

This year, Rick Scholes and Trent Hayden from ILSHIM Australia, made the long journey to Sweden to test their skills. They planned on arriving the week before the competition to get over the inevitable jetlag and do a little site-seeing. Our Swedish hosts did an exceptional job of making Rick and Trent feel welcome and they enjoyed the trip very much. They made many new friends along the way, and hope to return to Sweden in the future. As far as results went, both of the boys went to Sweden to gain valuable experience in multiple fights against international opponents and to that end both of them applied their knowledge as best they could and came home with a far greater depth of knowledge than they could have hoped for. Along the way Rick was eliminated in the pool stages after a number of very close matches, and Trent was fortunate enough to progress all the way through to the medal rounds and achieved a Bronze Medal (Senior Male Sparring TOP LEVEL -80kg). Both Rick and Trent are very excited about everything that they have learned and are looking forward to sharing this knowledge with other Taekwon-Do enthusiasts in Australia.

On Saturday the 31st of March, Master Daher travelled to Stawell to conduct our first grading of 2012. As we had a smaller number of participants than usual, Master Daher decided to conduct the grading similar to a seminar format.
The focus for the day was fundamental movements. Three students of similar belt levels were asked to perform movements while the rest of the class was asked to assess the movement and comment on areas of improvement. To begin with Master Daher would prompt the students to turn their attention to the stance, the hand position etc. By the end of the session the students needed no assistance and were becoming their own grading assessors. Master Daher’s philosophy was that if the class could correct others they could then assess and fix their own technique.
As the grading progressed individual technique progressed to patterns. The students felt empowered as their own assessors and the pressure cooker of the formal grading was lessened considerably.
Thank you, Master Daher, for allowing us to be the first club to experience your new style of grading. It was a most positive experience for all of us and we look forward to your next visit to Stawell.

Master Daher's flexibility is second to none!

On Sunday the 1st of April we had the pleasure of having Master Daher at Il Shim Melbourne to run our first Masterclass and Grading for 2012. Students from Il Shim Melbourne, Latrobe Valley and Dandenong turned out in force to appreciate the prodigious talents of our Master.

We started off the day learning how to examine students. Yes it was April Fools Day, but no this was not a joke. Each student, whether black belt or white belt, had the opportunity to step into the shoes of the examiner. By teaching our students to look for what Master Daher looks for means that the new examiner and student both understand what is required. Instead of having one pair of eyes looking at 45 students we now had 45 pairs of eyes looking at our students. Everyone was learning which is what a Masterclass is all about.

Towards the end of the morning all of the students had the opportunity to show their newly found knowledge in front of Master Daher and all performed more than well enough to pass their grading. We thank Master Daher for coming down to Melbourne and giving us anther fantastic grading and Masterclass. Thanks also to Mrs Harper for her tireless work arranging the grading, these events wouldn’t be the success they are without her. Thank you to the senior belts who assisted on the day, to Mr Steven Harper for coming down from Stawell, and to Mr and Mrs Proctor and all of the team from Latrobe Valley who also travelled a fair distance to be in attendance.

Two venues, two different activities and a small grading – all on the same day?  Didn’t Il Shim LaTrobe and Il Shim Melbourne have a busy day!

By Mr Dave Proctor, 3rd Degree

Sunday the 18th March was, thankfully, a clear and sunny day as Il Shim’s LaTrobe and Melbourne clubs joined together for both a demonstration and seminar.

The demonstration was part of the LaTrobe City Multicultural festival and was a great opportunity to expose people to the art of TaeKwon-Do.  After the usual pre-performance jitters (and a few minor hiccups) we kicked off (no pun intended -honestly) with Il Shim Melbourne performing fundamental movements in walking stance. Due to the limited stage space (thanks principally to the many volunteers from both clubs!) the Melbourne people then made way for LaTrobe students to demonstrate “L” stance techniques.

At this stage we were to demonstrate self defence techniques and strategies but time was against us so we moved to Melbourne students demonstrating tournament style sparring which was performed extremely well. LaTrobe student were then sparring using a non-contact system to show the variation in sparring methods and how TaeKwon-Do is accessible to all ages.

After sparring we began power breaking. This was a new experience for some of the Melbourne students as we were using timber boards they’d not encountered before.  All performed very creditably, although Mr Harper nearly sent a board flying through a speaker on the stage!

After a short, and mostly illusory, lunch break the two clubs adjourned to Churchill for a seminar at which Mr Harper had consented to grade four junior white belts. In the spirit of inclusivity it was decided that all present would be on the floor for the grading. For the four juniors this meant that their assessment lasted 40 minutes – at which they performed extremely well.  At this point the four gradees were free to depart but, to their credit, they elected to stay and watch proceedings for an hour or so – by the time the left there were more than a few very weary juniors.

Mr Harper then spent time with those still on the floor discussing fundamental technique. We then split into small groups to practice patterns appropriate to our grade.  At the conclusion of the seminar all gathered for afternoon tea (lunch in many cases) and the Melbourne students prepared for the long drive home.

Many thanks are owed to those students of Il Shim Melbourne for making the journey to LaTrobe and assisting with our promotion of the art. Special thanks are due the Harpers, not only for bringing their entire family to the event and Mr Harper running a seminar for LaTrobe students but to Mrs Harper who spent much of the seminar fitting new LaTrobe students with doboks.

Kick-Off Camp report from Gerard Kelly IV Dan Sunshine Coast

Chances are if your legs are still hurting you were present for the last two sessions of the kick-off camp 2012. Once again practitioners from all over Australia converged at Tallebudgera to participate in the two day event which is the highlight of the start of the year for me!

Day one started with a session on pre-arranged free sparring held by yours truly. The rules were covered in its basic format and then the class was divided into pairs so that they could get into choreographing their 10-20 second routine. Everyone did very well and we showed off the routines we thought were looking good. The masters had arrived by this stage and were impressed with the creativity shown by the students. I finished with a challenge for everyone to take this event and practice in class as something different that they could do to vary their training.

The second session was with Mr Robbie Meddlin and this was a class on focus. Mr Meddlin emphasised the need to set your goals, but to make sure that you write them down so you can keep track of your progress. He also pointed out that there is a fine line between perseverance and stupidity! Also the reasons why you lose focus were covered, which I felt was fantastic as its easy to say what keeps you focused but many people tend to overlook what distracts you from YOUR goals!!

Mr Van Beelen was next with his power breaking knowledge, and once again he shows exactly why he has dominated in this event for over a decade in both local, state and international competition. All of the 5 techniques were covered and the students all got to practice them under the watchful eye of some of the most experienced competitors and instructors. The importance of using your hips was made very clear in the power of all the techniques and Mr Van Beelen was clear and concise in his teaching!

A quick break for lunch and we had the pleasure of having Master Daher teach us sooner than expected as on of our guest speakers could not make it that day. We covered self defense from the ground and once again I was to be the test crash dummy. It is actually very enlightening to be on the receiving end of these techniques, as it gives you a very good insight into whether or not these techniques are effective! Believe me they are VERY effective!! One concerned black stripe asked me if I was okay after taking a pummeling from Master Daher, I responded that yes I was indeed okay but it showed that my body conditioning was up to scratch as I walked away unhurt.

The last session of the day was an enhanced version of netball, with three balls three very unbiased umpires and two goal areas!! Lots of fun was had and the umpires definitely did not break any rules by scoring goals!!!

Day two started with Mr Steve Weston VI dan from Tasmania emphasising the importance of the 9 training secrets of taekwon-do! Do you remember them all? I do because Mr Weston made the session both fun and practical. All of the secrets were taught with the practical demonstration of what we do when using them. Mr Weston’s scientific background made it entertaining to learn these secrets as we were moving a lot while our brains were being engaged at the same time!

Mr Harper took the next session and it was devoted to doing wights without any weights to lift!!! We did all of our exercises with a partner providing the resistance needed to complete the sets! I found this session also enlightening as it shows that you definitely don’t need a gym to workout!!!!!

Master Mcphail was next and we knew that we were in for a treat! His sessions are always well thought out and lots of fun. We covered the changes in how we train our core region using a varied form of sit-up called the McGill sit-up and varied forms of planking as well! We did a race using the planking to push-up and back again and then it was time for our high intensity work-out!!! We did a session using the tomatic scale. (Hope i spelt that right!) Three exercises, 8 sets of each using the lowest amount we did as our score for each exercise! Push-ups, squats and burpees were the 3 exercises given and by the end of the burpees there were a lot of people in pain, myself included. My score was 36 which I am happy to say was one of the highest on the day! Master Mcphail was even impressed!! Once again showing that you don’t need a gym to exercise intensely was the order of the day with this session and my legs are still killing me as I had gym on Monday!!!!

The last session was with Master Daher on the beach and once again this session was vigorous!! Lots of running in the water, push-ups in the water, sit-ups in the water, sparring in the water!!! The meditating in the water was a real highlight for me and I had to be roused twice as I was really in the moment with the ocean and sea air all around me, it was just sublime!!!

Any of you that were there at the camp are saying “what about the mystery guest Mr Kelly? You forgot him!!!” No, I have left him till last because he made quite an impression on me. How many times have you had the opportunity to talk to a millionare? In my life I have talked to several and they all share something in common! They are just normal people who have done the simple things really well! Darren Stephens was no different, he had such an easy manner about him and his outlook on life is so similar to mine, I found him very easy to listen to. We did some kinetic exercises to show the power of the mind over the body, which are really interesting to see. We also did some setting of trigger points, which when activated can do some amazing things depending on what they are set up for. We learnt that top athletes and sports people use these techniques to enhance their performance and I could really notice the effects!!! A lot of lessons came out of this session I couldn’t name them all but one of them was that if you want anything in life, you have to get up off your bum to get it!!!!!!

In closing this was a fantasic event again and I am already planning for the nxt one!!! Thankyou Master Daher and Mr Abdallah for organising this fantastic event and for a great many other things!!!

2012 Kick Off Camp Review

The Kick Off Camp for 2012 was set up for something different this year, as it took into consideration some of the comments that were presented at previous Kick Off camps. The general feeling from most was the degree of muscle soreness that they were experiencing after the first day. So this time the event was structured so that focus was on a low level impact on the body for the first day, leaving no excuse for when they all returned the next day.

We had a line up of spectacular presenters and speakers, all which were TKD focused, enabling us to relate what we had learnt to our own training. It was enjoyable to get such precise training from experienced instructors that have competed at world competition level and pass on their knowledge.

The event saw Mr Gerard Kelly take us through traditional sparring, which attracted a lot of interest among the lower ranking students, giving us all a hands on practical application of this reasonably new addition to world competitions.

This was then followed by Mr Robbie Medlin, who spoke about focus, goal setting and finding a way to enjoy your training. His talk made everyone think how they could adopt some of what was said into their own training.

Mr Van Beelen was very impressive with his positive presentation on power breaking, giving us the tools to achieve great heights.

The all inspiring Mystery Guest Mr Darren Stephens talk was to basically say wake up, whatever you want to achieve is possible, if you want it bad enough and he used some simple techniques to help along the way.

I (John Abdallah) was in charge of entertainment and seeing that I can’t juggle or swallow swords, although I am very funny, was just not going to be enough. I split the group into two teams and threw in three mini soccer balls. The un-organised chaos was well accepted after a full on day of focus and concentration.

Day 2, I promised everyone that it was going to be the hardest day of training they have had for a long while. The highest ranking instructors, Mr Steve Weston, Mr Paul Harper and Master Paul McPhail took us to our limits and did not disappoint anyone.

Mrs Lauren Hall, spoke briefly about the new direction that ITF Australia will be taking, going fully automated with a live online system for the whole organisation.

Finally as always Master Daher finished everyone off in the water, as if the previous instructors hadn’t done enough damage, all were exhausted by the end and glad that they had finally made it to the finish.

A big thank you to all that contributed to make this event as enjoyable as it was.
